<p>This study integrates variable-centered and person-centered approaches to explore the complex relationship between career adaptability and meaning in life among Chinese university students (<i>N</i> = 1128). Structural equation modeling reveals that career decision-making self-efficacy partially mediates the positive effect of meaning in life on career adaptability, rather than through a growth mindset. Latent profile analysis identifies four profiles: contented idealists, contented-oriented idealists, pragmatically oriented idealists, and pragmatic idealists, with differences in gender, grade, age, growth mindset, and career decision-making self-efficacy. The results validate the career construction theory and call for tailored intervention strategies for groups with low adaptability.</p>
