<p>This study investigates the dual-path mechanism through which lack of parental career engagement (LPCE) impairs vocational high school students’ career planning ability (CPA), focusing on 814 Chinese students. We empirically validate that LPCE directly reduces CPA and sequentially diminishes career social support (CSS) and career self-efficacy (CSE), with a significant chain mediation effect. By integrating Social Cognitive Career Theory with Career Construction Theory, we extend the “environment-cognition-behavior” framework to reveal how LPCE erodes external support resources and internal efficacy beliefs. These findings highlight targeted interventions to mitigate family-related career barriers in vocational education, emphasizing compensatory school-based support systems.</p>
