<p>Sexual abuse in childhood or adolescence can have long-term detrimental effects. This study used a phenomenological approach to examine the school and work experiences of 28 men who experienced such abuse. Findings revealed persistent challenges in forming interpersonal relationships and a lack of personal engagement both in school and the workplace. During their school time, participants experienced difficulties developing relationships with peers and seeking isolation or control, and had low investment in their academic requirements. During adulthood, they experienced work as a way to escape their psychological trauma provoked by sexual abuse, rather than experiencing it as a way to reach personal goals and self-expression.</p>
