Analysis and cost estimation of a prestressed concrete bridge deck

This paper focuses on the analysis and design of a prestressed concrete bridge deck. The motivation for this study is the high volume of traffic between Tambaram and the MIT flyover area in Chennai, Tamilnadu, likely due to the presence of many shopping complexes and theaters in the region. The goal is to explore the idea of connecting Tambaram and the MIT flyover to help reduce traffic congestion in this busy corridor. An elaborate analysis and design of a 30-meter-long post-tensioned prestressed concrete (PSC) T-beam bridge deck, manually as per IS 1343:2012 and IRC:112, and using STAAD.Pro software is presented in this work. Materials used are M50-grade concrete, Fe500 grade steel, and Freyssinet 7 K-15 tendon system. Structural performance was analysed under service as well as ultimate load conditions. Results show that the PSC deck meets both strength, serviceability requirements, as well as being economical through detailed cost estimation. Results indicate that the PSC deck systems can be very well applied for medium to long-span bridges. The study also provides recommendations for future explorations on the resilience of PSC decks due to fatigue, thermal and braking loads in addition to dynamic forces like wind and earthquakes, use of fibre reinforced polymeric materials for tendons, validation using a finite element analysis software as well as life cycle assessments.
