<p>In estuarine and coastal habitats, subjected to natural and anthropogenic pressures, characterizing possible small-scale spatial patterns in phytoplankton species assemblages is of interest in understanding the functioning of such ecosystems. This study, conducted in the Bay of Brest, North-West France, assessed whether spatial patterns in phytoplankton species assemblages can emerge at sub-mesoscale in a macrotidal coastal environment, and the potential underlying mechanisms. Thanks to a citizen science program, "<i>Objectif Plancton</i>," innovative and unique synoptic observations of phytoplankton community structures were collected in 17 locations in the bay in April, June, and September 2021 and 2022. The study revealed small-scale spatial structuring in the phytoplankton community. Three groups of stations were identified in the bay: a group representing the southern part of the bay, a group representing the northern part, and an intermediate group in the center. The study also showed that the configuration of these clusters can change in response to alternating episodes of high and low runoff, combined with alternating spring and neap tides. Using synoptic and fine-scale data, our results highlight that the placement of fixed monitoring stations can strongly influence the patterns of variability observed.</p>
