From Fields to Skylines: A Holistic Examination of Land Use and Cover Changes in Samserganj, Murshidabad District, West Bengal, India

This study examines land use and land cover (LULC) transformations in the Samserganj Block of Murshidabad District, West Bengal, between 2013 and 2023. By combining remote sensing techniques, quantitative analysis, and socio-economic surveys, this study identifies significant shifts in LULC categories and their driving forces, offering a comprehensive perspective on both physical changes and the human perceptions influencing them. Spatial analysis based on Landsat imagery indicates a decline in agricultural land from 45.3 km2 to 37.34 km2, alongside considerable expansions in vegetation and built-up areas, which increased from 12.8 to 20.15 km2 and from 6.2 to 10.78 km2, respectively. Change detection is further enhanced through the use of change vector analysis and a transition matrix, providing detailed insights into the magnitude and direction of these transformations. Incorporating Likert scale data from socio-economic surveys, this study applies the relative importance index (RII) to identify the key drivers of land use change. The findings reveal a strong public inclination toward commercialization and non-agricultural activities, influenced by factors such as population growth, economic conditions, and infrastructure development, while perceptions of the impacts of LULC change indicate increasing concerns over groundwater scarcity, waste management, and environmental degradation. Qualitative insights from focus group discussions and key informant interviews improve understanding of the socio-economic landscape, highlighting the effects of population growth and labor migration. This approach shows that combining geospatial analysis with community-based perspectives strengthens understanding of the complex relationship between human activities, socio-economic dynamics, and environmental change, offering valuable insight for sustainable land use management and regional development.
