Assessing Community-Based Flood Disaster Risk Reduction Around Lake Bassotu in Hanang District, Tanzania

This study assessed community-based flood disaster risk reduction around Lake Bassotu in Hanang District, Tanzania. It focuses on the factors influencing vulnerability, socio-economic impacts, and the effectiveness of existing resilience strategies. Data were collected via household questionnaires, key informant interviews, and field observations. Data were collected from a total of 123 respondents. It includes 120 household heads selected through random sampling and three key informants chosen purposively. Quantitative data were analysed using the International Business Machines Corporation Statistical Package for Service Solution (IBM SPSS Version 26), while qualitative data underwent thematic analysis. The findings were presented using tables, figures, and images to make them clearer and easier to understand. The results show that Lake Bassotu is an important resource. It provides water for household use, supports irrigation and fishing, and helps sustain local biodiversity. However, flood risks are increasing, driven by high rainfall, deforestation, agricultural expansion, and obstruction of natural drainage systems. The years 1997/1998 and 2006/2007 were reported as the most severe flood events, with 76% of respondents noting a rising trend in flood frequency. Impacts were widespread, including property and infrastructure damage, agricultural losses, transport disruption, and community displacement. Despite awareness of flood hazards, coping mechanisms remain limited, dominated by migration (69%), followed by 13% who have constructed ridges while 18% have devised nothing. The study also found that government interventions have helped lower flood risks for nearby communities. These interventions include relocating communities, dredging lake outlets, reforesting areas, restoring wetlands, and enforcing buffer zones. The study concludes that while Lake Bassotu continues to sustain livelihoods, recurrent flooding remains a critical threat. The study recommends strengthening participatory, ecosystem-based, and context-specific strategies to enhance long-term resilience and ensure the sustainable management of the lake basin.
