Analysis of Spatial Spillover Effects of Land-Use Intensity and Green Economic Efficiency in Rapidly Urbanizing Regions: A Case Study of China’s Yangtze River Delta

An increasing body of research confirms that unsustainable land use that reduces the supply capacity of global ecosystem services (ES) undermines human well-being (HW), particularly in developing countries. However, the positive contributions of cross-regional government coordination strategies in compensating for ES and HW have been overlooked in certain academic fields. To address this gap, I used China’s Yangtze River Delta (YRD) as a case study, drawing on statistical data and satellite remote sensing images from 2010 to 2020. developed an evaluation index system in which land-use intensity (LUI) and green economic efficiency (GEE) represent the threat of human activities to ES and regional economic welfare in HW. To examine the spatiotemporal correlations between LUI and GEE in the study area, I used the center-of-gravity method and an exploratory spatial data analysis model. Finally, the spatial spillover effects of LUI and GEE at the city and regional scales were tested using the Spatial Durbin Model. The results showed that (1) the LUI of cities in the west and south of this region was < 0. 40, whereas that of cities in the north and east was > 0. 60; the GEE of the central cities was > 0. 60, whereas that of the peripheral cities was < 0. 0.40; and the center of gravity of LUI moved 86. 88 km to the southwest, whereas that of GEE moved 39. 08 km to the northwest during the study period; (2) The LUI and GEE in the YRD showed significant (p < 5%) positive spatial correlations (with mean global Moran’s I values of 0. 359 and 0. 178, respectively), and cities located in areas with high LUI agglomeration and high GEE agglomeration accounted for 31. 7% of the total; (3) The LUI and GEE exhibited significant spatial spillover effects, with the main influencing factors including consumer market potential, location and transportation conditions, economic development rate, proportion of secondary and tertiary industries, actual utilized foreign capital, and R & D investment in science and technology. These findings provide scientific support for integrating multiple planning frameworks or regional sustainable development strategies in the YRD and serve as a reference for other rapidly urbanizing areas in formulating coordinated development policies.
