<p>We examine the <i>areqe</i> and <i>atela</i> value chains and the effects of introducing mechanized distillation on gender dynamics. Data were collected via a structured questionnaire from 831 randomly selected households in Arsi Negele, southern Ethiopia, that engage in <i>areqe</i> and <i>areqe-atela</i> production, and from 300 livestock farmers who rely on <i>atela</i> as supplementary feed. Results indicate that, traditionally, <i>areqe-atela</i> production was the domain of women; they were responsible for all activities and had full control over income. However, the advent of mechanized distillation has facilitated men’s participation, thereby altering ownership and income shares. The survey results show a significant difference between women and men in the adoption of new distillation technology. Women still dominate activities such as input purchasing, toasting/roasting, brew preparation, distillation, and selling <i>areqe</i> and <i>atela</i>. Thus, a better understanding of the gender dynamics in the <i>areqe-atela</i> value chain is vital not only to overcome feed shortages but also to develop technologies that address the challenges faced by women and men alike.</p>
