Highland Cattle Herding in East Nepal Himalaya: Examining Challenges and Opportunities
摘要
We explore the challenges and opportunities of herding highland cattle in the Eastern Nepal Himalaya, concentrating on the impacts of climate change, the expansion of market forces, and biodiversity conservation efforts. Our study relies on primary data gathered between 2021 and 2023 through household surveys, interviews, observations, and focus group discussions with highland cattle herders in the Phalelung rangeland. Climatic data were obtained from the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology. We employed thematic, narrative, and basic statistical analysis. The results indicate that Himalayan herding faces mounting pressure from environmental shifts, the increasing adoption of cash crop farming by lowland communities, and biodiversity conservation initiatives. The growth of livestock-based tourism in the area creates a new opportunity for herders to diversify their livelihoods. It offers hope and inspiration to younger generations, strengthening the link between youth and pastoralism.
