<p>Although remarkable advancements have been documented in ornamental lily breeding, the genetic merits of edible <i>Lilium brownii</i> var. <i>viridulum</i> (BB) have not been systematically investigated. To bridge this knowledge gap and pioneer dual-purpose cultivars, this study employed conventional and modern cytogenetic techniques to investigate the hybridisation characteristics, fertility, and chromosomal composition of hybrids between the edible <i>L. brownii</i> var. <i>viridulum</i> (BB) and various types of ornamental lilies (AA, OO, LL, LLO). The findings showed that both reciprocal crosses of BB × LL were successful, and the genomes of the two species could not be distinguished in the progenies using genomic in situ hybridisation (GISH). In the case of BB × AA, progeny was obtained through cut-stigma pollination, and GISH successfully differentiated the B and A genomes. However, conventional pollination and cut-stigma pollination were unsuccessful in BB × OO crosses. For LLO × BB, conventional pollination yielded a higher success rate than cut-stigma pollination. These findings suggested that BB is closely related to the <i>L. longiflorum</i> (LL) but more distantly related to Asiatic (AA) and Oriental (OO) lilies. Hence, <i>L. brownii</i> var. <i>viridulum</i> should be classified within the Leucolirion section. Additionally, the LLO × BB cross produced aneuploid offspring, which increased the potential for selection and laid the foundation for breeding lilies with both ornamental and edible traits.</p>
