Hooves, herbs and heritage: ecological insights into the cultural and ethnoveterinary use of Bhagwanpura forest flora in livestock systems

Being important component of the local economy and cultural norms, the silvopastoral system of Bhagwanpura forest has been supporting rural community livestock for a long time. This is the first ethnoveterinary research in Bhagwanpura Forest using quantitative ethnobotanical indices for statistical interpretation of plant(s) use in this regard. Using semi-structured questionnaires and interviews, 122 informants (29 females and 93 males) provided ethnoveterinary data. The participants reported 93 plant species from 37 families and 83 genera comprising of 20 trees, 09 shrubs, 05 grasses, 01 climber, and 58 herbs to cure their livestock diseases. The analysis of relationships between medicinal taxa and the types of diseases treated showed that Withania somnifera (L.) Dunal. (87%) for galactagogue,s diarrhea, bloating and body tonic and Nicotiana plumbaginifolia Viv. (87%) for ectoparasites and black leg were the most significant species. Forty (40) popular and 53 non-popular species were proposed by Relative Popularity Level. For 13 major disease categories, the mean Informant Consensus Factor was 0.5. The study represents a pioneering documentation in preserving the diversity of therapeutic plant species, provide a better understanding of how herbal medicine is applied in regional practices, and also demonstrating how old knowledge systems can support contemporary veterinary techniques and aid in the sustainable management of animal health. It is recommended that pharmacological and phytochemical investigations be carried out on the most commonly cited species. Furthermore, in order to conserve this important indigenous knowledge for long-term cattle healthcare and future medication discovery, conservation initiatives and documentation efforts must to be reinforced.
