<p><i>Ulmus castaneifolia</i> (chestnut-leaved elm) is a native tree species distributed in southern China that has traditional utility within the Baiku Yao people as food, fodder, and timber. This study integrates ethnobotanical surveys and nutritional analysis to systematically explore the role of <i>U. castaneifolia</i> in the traditional knowledge system of the Baiku Yao and its potential as a resource. We documented the local harvesting practices and processing of <i>U. castaneifolia</i> bark starch through ethnobotanical methods such as field interviews and participatory observation. This historically vital famine food remains in use today. Additionally, the Baiku Yao feeds the leaves to Xiang pigs, believing it enhances growth and meat quality, reflecting practical livestock-rearing knowledge. The Laboratory analyses showed that the leaves and bark are rich in protein, starch, dietary fiber, minerals, and flavonoids, demonstrating the optimized potential of these species in human food and animal feed. <i>U. castaneifolia</i> exhibits multifunctional value in the Baiku Yao region, highlighting the integration of traditional knowledge with sustainable resource use. The MaxEnt modeling employed showed that the southern part of China, accounting for almost 16.53% of the entire country, is suitable for the cultivation of <i>U. castaneifolia</i>. This study provides a case for interdisciplinary research in ethnobotany and plant resource science while offering insights into the evaluation and utilization of indigenous plant species.</p>
