Papaya (Carica papaya L.) accessions native to Mexico with resistance to papaya ringspot virus pathotype papaya (PRSV-P)

Papaya (Carica papaya L.) is native to Mexico and Central America. In Mexico, commercial cultivars are susceptible to papaya ringspot virus pathotype papaya (PRSV-P). Aphid vectors transmit this virus. Germplasm evaluation allows the selection of tolerant genotypes. The objective was to determine the degree of resistance of 25 native papaya (C. papaya) accessions to PRSV-P, transmitted by the vector Aphis gossypii under greenhouse conditions. Incidence and severity were recorded every 7 days after inoculation. A Severity Index (SI) and the Area Under the Disease Progress Curve (AUDPC) were calculated. A Kruskal–Wallis analysis and Dunn’s test were performed to determine differences in resistance. The temperature was recorded and growing degree days (GDD) for PRSV-P were calculated. A Spearman correlation was conducted between severity and GDD. Accessions A77, A203, and A205 showed no incidence or severity of the disease. Accession A80 showed the most significant delay in incidence, the lowest SI and AUDPC, followed by A66a and A170. The control cultivar Maradol was the most susceptible genotype, followed by A48b. The remaining accessions exhibited intermediate levels of tolerance. A correlation was found between disease severity and GDD; when the temperature reached 28.2 °C or higher, severity decreased. Thus, this temperature is considered the threshold for PRSV-P. The promising accessions were collected from Guerrero, Campeche, and Tabasco, Mexico, locations within the center of origin of C. papaya.
