<p>The present study was carried out to investigate genetic diversity of Dagestan (Eastern North Caucasus) apricot germplasm and its relationship with cultivars from Europe, Crimea, South Caucasus, West Asia, Central Asia and China. Genetic analysis was performed for 89 genotypes belonging to four major eco-geographical groups of apricot cultivars using 14 simple sequence repeats (SSR) or microsatellites. The number of alleles in the involved markers ranged from 4 to 20 with an average value of 10.071 per locus. Genetic diversity decreased from Central Asian cultivars to Irano-Caucasian&#xa0;and Dagestan cultivars. The analysis of genetic relationships of the studied apricots cultivars using the unweighted pair-group method with arithmetic mean (UPGMA) and principal coordinate analysis (PCoA) methods made it possible to divide the whole sample into two clusters: the first cluster included cultivars of European, West Asian, Central Asian and Chinese origin, the second cluster consisted genotypes from Dagestan, Crimea and South Caucasus. Based on the results obtained, an assumption of genetic commonality of South Caucasian, Crimean and Dagestan apricot cultivars was made. The study confirms the hypothesis of proximity of the Caucasian subgroup to the Irano-Caucasian eco-geographical group and the association of cultivars from Dagestan and South Caucasus. Nevertheless, for some cultivars from Dagestan, was detected the influence of the Central Asian gene pool. The data obtained allow a better understanding of the genetic basis of the indigenous apricot genetic resources from Dagestan.</p>
