Harnessing traditional ethnoveterinary practices and medicinal plants for sustainable livestock health in arid rangelands

Arid rangelands are crucial for livestock production, providing vital grazing resources that support animal health and contribute to the livelihoods of pastoral communities. The study aims to collect data on the diversity of medicinal plants used to treat livestock, as they are inexpensive and sustainable compared to allopathic medicines. This study was conducted in the arid rangeland ecosystem of Punjab to collect the precious folklore knowledge used nowadays to treat cattle. The survey was conducted in a research area involving older adults (male and female) engaged in cattle rearing, along with a few younger participants. The herbaceous plants constituted the majority (58.3%), followed by trees (20%), grasses (14.1%), and shrubs (6.6%). Data analysis utilized Relative Frequency of Citation (RFC), Frequency of Citation (FC), Use Value (UV), Use Report (UR), and Family Importance Value (FIV) to assess the significance and utilization of cattle within the community. A total of 120 medicinal plants were identified in the study area, comprising 39 families and 87 Genera. The FC values varied from 140 (Allium sativum L. and Allium cepa L.) to 9 (Solanum melongena L.). At the same time, RFC ranged from 0.93% (Allium sativum L., Allium cepa L., and Coriandrum sativum L.) to 0.07% (Lepidum sativum L. and Neurada procumbens L.). The species with the highest UV (0.61) was A. cepa L., and the lowest value (0.07) was recorded for Citrus colocynthis L. In contrast, the UR ranged from (86) A. cepa L. to the lowest valued (2) for Prunus persica L. The treatment’s most preferred part was leaves (30%) compared to seeds (25%), fruits (11.6%), aerial parts (11.6%), whole plants (10%), flowers (4.1%), and roots (4.1%) Rhizomes (1.6%) and bulbs (2.5%) were considered one of the most minor plant parts for the treatment. Out of the total, 81.66% of plants were administered orally, 14.16% received topical administration, and 4.16% received both oral and topical administration. The documented medicinal plants were primarily used to treat major livestock ailments such as rheumatic diseases, dyspepsia, respiratory infections, parasitic worm infestations (anthelmintic), and wounds, highlighting their significant role in ethnoveterinary healthcare. One of the primary aims of this study is to underscore the significance of medicinal plants in supporting livestock health and recovery without relying on modern allopathic treatments. Additionally, it seeks to document and preserve traditional ethnoveterinary knowledge, which is at risk of disappearing due to modernization and changing cultural practices.
