<p>The genus <i>Lathyrus</i> includes about 160 species with significant economic and sustainable value along with cultivated species (<i>Lathyrus sativus</i> L.). However, the production and productivity of cultivated species have been adversely affected by challenges like climate change, emerging pests and diseases, and evolving cultivation practices. Systematic characterization and evaluation of the wild gene pool for breeding purposes has become crucial for crop improvement. In the present study, a total of 70 accessions of <i>Lathyrus</i>, encompassing 10 species, viz., <i>L. amphicarpos</i>&#xa0;L., <i>L. aphaca</i> L.<i>, </i><i>L. cicera</i> L.<i>, </i><i>L. clymenum</i> L.<i>, </i><i>L. hirsutus</i> L.<i>, </i><i>L. ochrus</i> (L.) DC.<i>, </i><i>L. odoratus</i> L.<i>, </i><i>L. sativus</i> L.<i>, </i><i>L. sylvestris</i> L.<i>,</i> and <i>L. tingitanus</i> L., along with five check cultivars (control) were grown using augmented block design (ABD) and characterized for 10 qualitative and 10 quantitative traits. Cluster analysis revealed six distinct groups and principal component analysis (PCA) captured 82.03% of variation among traits and accessions. The study identified promising accessions with key traits for improving cultivated <i>Lathyrus</i> species. Notable accessions include <i>L. amphicarpos</i> (EC1061207) for early flowering (85.22&#xa0;days), <i>L. clymenum</i> (EC1068331) for late maturity (157.95&#xa0;days), <i>L. tingitanus</i> (SNP96321) for longer pod (6.95&#xa0;cm), <i>L. ochrus</i> (IFLA503) for the highest number of seeds/pod (6.33), <i>L. sativus</i> (EC1068343) for highest plant height (93.31&#xa0;cm), and <i>L. sativus</i> (EC1068342) for heavier seed (19.86&#xa0;g). The identified promising accessions can be effectively utilized in the <i>Lathyrus</i> improvement programme through introgression breeding, contributing to the domestication and enhanced utilization of wild <i>Lathyrus</i> species.</p>
