Traditional medicinal plants for gastrointestinal and hepato-renal disorders in the Ganga river watershed

This study explores the ethnobotanical knowledge and use of medicinal plants for treating gastrointestinal and hepato-renal (GH) disorders among indigenous communities along the Ganga River watershed, a critical 2,600 km freshwater system extending from Gomukh to Gangasagar. Ethnobotanical data were collected from 99 respondents across 26 ecologically diverse sites, each located approximately 100 km apart and covering a 10 km radius on both sides of the river. A total of 55 medicinal plant species were documented, with most knowledge holders being older individuals with limited formal education. The Fabaceae and Lamiaceae families were the most represented, with herbaceous plants as the dominant life forms and leaves as the most frequently used parts. Decoction was the most common mode of preparation due to its therapeutic efficiency and ease of use. Quantitative ethnobotanical indices revealed high Use Values (UV) for Calotropis procera and Wrightia tinctoria, while Syzygium cumini and Phyllanthus emblica showed the highest Relative Frequency of Citation, Fidelity Level, Relative Importance Level, and Corrected Fidelity Level scores. These species are widely recognized for their efficacy in treating a range of GH disorders (appetite loss, cholera, chronic renal pain, diabetes, diarrhea, dysentery, gastric disturbances, hemorrhoids, indigestion, jaundice, stomachache). The findings underscore the significance of preserving indigenous knowledge systems and highlight the therapeutic potential of native medicinal plants in managing GH disorders. This documentation serves as a foundational resource for future pharmacological investigations and the development of safer, plant-based therapeutic agents.
