From petals to potential: the multifaceted world of Rosa persica Michx. ex Juss

The utilization of valuable wild plants has always intrigued breeders seeking to enhance the existing genetic resources. Among the various types of roses, the Persian rose (Rosa persica) stands out due to its simple, undivided leaves that lack stipules and feature a distinctive chestnut-red blotch at the base of each petal, making them particularly valuable for targeted breeding programs. The high genetic and morphological diversity found in their distribution areas, ranging from semi-arid plains to high mountain regions, reflects their adaptability and evolutionary processes. The induction of somatic embryos under in vitro culture conditions provides a solid foundation for genetic transformation and somaclonal diversity in this unique rose species. In this review, we aim to present the available information on the botanical, phenotypic, and genetic diversity, propagation methods, and medicinal properties of Rosa persica, despite the limited resources available regarding this species.
