<p>Okra [<i>Abelmoschus esculentus</i> (L.) Moench] is a multi-purpose vegetable of the family Malvaceae. Grown throughout the tropical, subtropical, warm and temperate regions, it is considered an important vegetable with high export potential. The Indian National Genebank (INGB) holds a significantly large germplasm collections to the tune of 5828 accessions conserved in the long-term storage. The present study involving a greater magnitude of okra germplasm (553 genotypes) from INGB was undertaken for identifying their genetic potential by characterizing them for three qualitative and eight quantitative traits. Accessions superior for multiple traits [EC930080—single fruit weight (51.80&#xa0;g), fruit length (20.06&#xa0;cm) and without any ridges on fruit surface, and IC13283—single fruit weight (53.65&#xa0;g) and fruit width (4.14&#xa0;cm)] were identified from the study, besides few accessions unique with respect to the fruit shape, colour and ridge characters. High heritability in days to 50 percent flowering and first fruit producing node implies that the accessions IC631190 and IC103919 could be used in selection and recombination breeding for targeting the earliness traits. Results also revealed that exotic collections held in the INGB hold many unique and significant characters indicating the importance of augmenting more collections for incorporation in current okra improvement programmes. Selection index score generated based on PC1 identified accessions promising for multiple traits. Systematic evaluation for confirming the stability of the superiority of the genotypes, agronomic characters, screening for biotic and abiotic stress resistance, evaluation for organoleptic traits and shelf life should be done for effective utilization of okra germplasm.</p>
