Spatiotemporal evolution and coupling coordination of land-use benefits in Henan Province, China: a GIS-based spatial analysis

Understanding the spatiotemporal dynamics of land-use benefits is essential for promoting coordinated regional development under rapid urbanization. Taking Henan Province, China, as a case study, this research investigates the spatiotemporal evolution and coupling coordination characteristics of land-use benefits from 2010 to 2023 by integrating statistical panel data with GIS-based spatial analysis. An evaluation index system encompassing economic, social, and ecological benefits was constructed using the entropy weight method. The coupling coordination degree model was employed to quantify system interactions, while the geographical detector approach was applied to identify key driving factors behind spatial differentiation. The results indicate that land-use benefits in Henan Province have generally increased over time, but significant spatial heterogeneity persists. A clear spatial pattern of “higher benefits in the north and lower benefits in the south” has gradually emerged, with core cities, particularly Zhengzhou, exhibiting pronounced agglomeration advantages. The overall coupling coordination degree improved from mild imbalance to moderately coordinated, with a spatial structure characterized by a core-periphery pattern and stronger coordination in central areas. GIS-based visualization reveals that cities with similar coordination levels tend to cluster spatially, highlighting distinct regional differentiation. Geographical detector results show that fiscal revenue per unit land area, technological innovation capacity, and residents’ consumption levels are the dominant drivers shaping the spatial coupling coordination of land-use benefits, whereas agricultural productivity and higher education resources exert relatively limited influence. These findings underscore the critical role of spatially differentiated fiscal capacity and innovation-driven development in enhancing land-use efficiency. This study demonstrates the value of integrating GIS-based spatial analysis with coupling coordination models to understand land-use benefit dynamics and provides empirical insights for spatial planning and land management policies that promote balanced, high-quality regional development.
