Geospatial analysis of land suitability for Teff (Eragrostis tef) cultivation in the Debena watershed, Western Ethiopia
摘要
Cereal crops are essential for human nutrition because they provide important carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals. However, land use land cover (LULC) changes, increasing climate variability, and evolving farming practices are threatening their availability and productivity. This study applies GIS and the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) to evaluate land suitability for teff (Eragrostis tef) cultivation in the Debena watershed. The research considers various ecological data, including LULC, distance to roads and markets, soil drainage, soil texture, slope, soil depth, land surface temperature, rainfall, and elevation, for spatial suitability analysis of teff (Eragrostis tef). The suitability thematic maps were categorized into four suitability classes: highly suitable (S1), moderately suitable (S2), marginally suitable (N1), and not suitable (N2). The study utilized ArcSWAT, IDRISI Selva 17, ERDAS Imagine 2015, and ArcGIS 10.3. The results showed that 32.2 km2 (1.8%) were highly suitable, 1546.8 km2 (85.4%) moderately suitable, 206.5 km2 (11.4%) marginally suitable, and 25.3 km2 (1.4%) not suitable. These findings indicate that the study area is largely suitable for teff cultivation, particularly under moderate suitability conditions, offering significant potential for expansion and management interventions. However, the limited extent of highly suitable land highlights the need for careful planning and prioritization. This research recommends that future studies can include additional ecological factors not considered in this analysis, such as soil pH and socioeconomic condition to improve the accuracy and applicability of suitability assessments.
