<p>The United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 6 aims to achieve universal access to safe drinking water by 2030. As the world's most populous country, India faces immense challenges in achieving SDG 6.2. This study examines the availability of improved drinking water sources at the household level in rural India, utilizing data from NFHS-4 and NFHS-5. A composite improved Drinking Availability Index (CIDWAI) was computed and diarrheal prevalence was correlated with access to improved water. Results show that Puducherry, Bihar, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Haryana and Goa are the top-performing states (&gt; 91% CIDWAI), while Manipur and Meghalaya ranked lowest. Although diarrhoeal prevalence declined in NFHS-5, several states still reported higher rates than the national average (7.3%). Correlation analysis revealed a negative association (−0.427) in NFHS-4 but a weak positive correlation (0.161) in NFHS-5, raising concern about water quality, handling practices, sanitation and child care. This study highlights spatial disparities and offers insights into India's progress towards SDG 6.1.</p>
