Geospatial analysis of quality of life using AHP and GIS in Boumerdes province municipalities, Algeria

This study assesses the territorial attractiveness of thirty-two municipalities in the Wilaya (province) of Boumerdès, Algeria, through a multidimensional assessment of quality of life, An integrated methodology combining the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) was employed based on field-collected data and structured indicators, These indicators were grouped into seven key dimensions, accessibility and mobility, economy, health, education, housing, environment, and culture, forming the basis for the spatial analysis and comparative evaluation. The results reveal substantial territorial disparities, Boumerdès stands out as the most attractive municipality, with a composite score of 0.80, owing to its high performance in accessibility and mobility, economic activity, and health services. They are followed by Boudouaou (economy 0.91; education 1.00) and Bordj Menaïel (economy 0.80; housing 1.00). In contrast, Benchoud, Leghata, and El Kharrouba ranked among the least attractive, recording consistently low scores for accessibility and mobility, economy, and culture. A correlation matrix was developed to better understand the interplay between dimensions. The findings show a strong positive correlation between accessibility and economic performance, emphasizing the critical role of infrastructure in local development. Additional moderate to weak correlations, particularly between health and the economy and between education and other dimensions, highlight the complex interdependencies that shape territorial attractiveness.
