摘要

Cities are dynamic entities with many forces acting upon them and transforming them in due course. The force of urbanization and the impact of globalization play a significant role in such transformation. The issue amplifies when any historical or traditional city comes into the picture, as these cities have deep layers of knowledge embedded in their urban fabric as a virtue of time. It thus becomes necessary to understand them more sensitively. Hence, the present study examines a traditional urban system through the lens of pattern language based on Christopher Alexander’s A Pattern Language. The study, through careful mapping and observation along with network analysis and theory of wholeness, extracts a repository of patterns that act as urban signatures of the city. The study attempts to understand the enigmatic and transcendental urban fabric that defines the identity of Varanasi, a story of 3000 years of urban continuity through spaces and patterns and their relevance in contemporary urban development.
