Unveiling the relationship between phytosociology and NDVI: Evidence from field and remote sensing observation in a tropical deciduous forest

The phytosociology plays a crucial role in assessing the structural health of plant communities to offer insights into the ecological dynamics of vegetation within a habitat and monitor vegetation health. This study aims to develop a relationship between plant communities (herbs, shrubs, and trees) and the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), in a tropical deciduous forest area i.e., Joypur, located in the Rarh tract of West Bengal, India. Both field observations and remote sensing techniques were employed to find out the relationship. A total of 74 plant species, representing 70 genera and 28 families, were identified from the forest. The frequency, density and importance value index (IVI) were used to assess the phytosociological pattern of the species. The findings showed that a) Oxalis corniculata (46.78), Meyna spinosa (66.01), and Shorea robusta (110.39) were the dominant species among herbs, shrubs, and trees b) Over 90% of the species displayed a contagious distribution pattern, while only about 8% exhibited a random distribution c) there was lower dominancy but moderate to high diversity across tree, shrub, and herb species, d) NDVI values of the forest area varied significantly between 1994 and 2014. In 2024, NDVI showed notable seasonal fluctuations, ranging from 0.365 to 0.104 in Summer and 0.330 to 0.019 in Winter. Shrub density had a weak negative correlation with Winter NDVI and a positive correlation with Summer NDVI, while tree density negatively correlated with both seasonal NDVI. This study provides crucial findings to facilitate the precise evaluation of ecosystem health, species dominance, and vegetation dynamics in the face of variable environmental and climatic conditions.
