<p>Displacement is unavoidable for any developmental project. Forceful displacement of families from their land in the mineral-rich areas without adequate compensation and restoration of livelihoods is causing impoverishment rather than improvement. Taking the Talcher Coalfield region as the study area, this study adopted Cernea’s Impoverishment and Risk Reconstruction (IRR) model to study the socio-economic risks created due to forced displacement. Two hundred respondents from displaced families were selected purposively from resettled and non-resettled villages of the study area and surveyed using a semi-structured questionnaire. Again, using Landsat series images, we studied the variation in the land use/land cover (LULC) pattern of the region taken in this study. It finds that mining caused forced displacement, created several socio-economic risks, and caused impoverishment of many affected families. Furthermore, there is a drastic change in the LULC pattern in the study area, which again has a deleterious impact on the ecological environment. Lastly, this study highlighted the livelihood reconstruction measures for addressing the impoverishment risks of the affected families.</p>
