<p>Walkable cities are essential for social cohesion, human health, and the conservation of natural resources and urban heritage. Walking is a healthy, pollution-free mode of transportation that promotes social interaction. This research examines the urban landscape attributes that enhance walkability in the historic center of Xalapa, Veracruz, Mexico, a city with one of the highest car ownership rates per capita in the country. A methodology was designed to integrate urban landscape analysis with walkability, a little-explored field in the national context. An approach that integrates aesthetic, functional, and perceptual aspects was applied to obtain an index that reflects the visual quality of the landscape and the walkability of 20 streets through an evaluation instrument. Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) was applied to the results of the physical‒spatial instrument to select the indicators with the greatest relationship. The analytic hierarchy process (AHP) was used to assign weights to the selected indicators. A weighted linear sum was implemented to obtain the scores of the streets, which were then grouped via cluster analysis. The results of the EFA and AHP revealed that the indicators of green structure, the presence of trees, urban signage, and sidewalk width positively influence people's walkability. Salvador Díaz Mirón, Universitario Gonzalo Aguirre and Paseo de los Lagos streets had the highest scores. Adults participated in in-person walks, describing the physical-spatial environment on the basis of criteria from Mexican urban design manuals. The respondents’ perceptions of and preferences for accessibility, safety, comfort, and landscapes were considered. The visual assessment revealed attributes impacting walkability from physical-spatial and psychophysical perspectives. The presence of trees, the quality of facades, the width of sidewalks, lighting, urban signage, and the proximity of public service stops are perceived positively by pedestrians, motivating them to walk. However, negative factors such as narrow sidewalks, the scarcity of trees, the presence of garbage, abandoned facades, or the lack of illuminated streets affect the perception of a walkable environment. In conclusion, the research shows that the quality of the urban landscape plays a fundamental role in people's decision to walk along a street. This integrated approach to visual assessment offers key information for identifying urban design interventions that promote walking, contributing to the development of more accessible and pleasant public spaces for pedestrians.</p>
