On-farm compost and basil residues extract on organic tomato: yield, quality, and mineral fortification responses

In organic farming, different bioproducts such as plant extracts and compost (obtained from recycling organic waste/residues) can promote the mineral fortification of vegetables. This study evaluated the agronomic performance and nutritional effects of an on-farm compost and a liquid extract derived from basil residues on organic tomato crop over two cropping cycles (2022–2023), within a fennel – tomato crop sequence, in Mediterranean environment. The tested treatments were on-farm compost applied alone (OC) or with basil extract spraying to crops (OCex), compared to a commercial organic vegetal fertilizer (ORG-V), an unfertilized control (NF), and NF with the extract (NFex). In 2022, treatments of OCex showed fruit weights higher by 36% than ORG-V, suggesting a stimulation effect on fruit formation. In 2023, tomato yield was reduced by 71%, on average of treatments, due to adverse climate conditions. The high Fe content in tomato fruits fertilized with OCex 1:5 is a noteworthy result, being observed in both years irrespective of the different weather conditions. Overall, the results highlighted the value of the tested agroecological practices (OC plus basil extract), potentially optimizing both tomato crop performance (i.e., total aboveground biomass) and Fe fortification, also under adverse conditions.
