Identification of parents and hybrids for higher breeding values and genetic gain for fruit quality in Mango (Mangifera indica L.)

The conventional evaluation strategies used in grain or vegetable crops are difficult to apply in trees and forestry crops. Recent advances and application of mixed models like REML/BLUP originally from animal improvement programs provide more flexibility, faster evaluation and selection advantage. In this study, 90 mango hybrids using five parents were evaluated over a period of two years for fruit quality parameters and analyzed using a mixed model. The repeatability coefficients for fruit weight, pulp content, overall acceptability and fruit flavour were high while repeatability coefficients were moderate for fruit texture, soluble solids (%), acidity and soluble solids:acidity ratio. Accuracy and genetic gains for fruit weight, pulp texture, pulp flavour, pulp content, soluble solids, acidity, soluble solids:acidity ratio and overall acceptability were 0.94, 0.83, 0.93, 0.81, 0.78, 0.76, 0.94 and 0.95 respectively and genetic gains were 441.72, 0.46, 1.04, 3.94, 31.63, 19.79 and 1.78 respectively. Overall, the parent combination of Ratna x Kent and Ratna x Banganapalli produced higher number of progenies with desired genetic gain and fruit quality traits as compared to other parents combinations (Ratna x Totapuri, Ratna x Royal Special and Ratna x Tommy Atkins). PCA indicated that the first six primary factors (PC1, PC2, PC3, PC4, PC5 and PC6) out of eight contributed 91.9% of the total variance whereas > 1 eigen value was only for PC1 (fruit weight), PC2 (fruit texture) and PC3 (Flavour). The FAI-BLUP selection index predicted hybrid numbers 71, 09, 61, 57 and 33 as top five superior hybrids. REML/BLUP and FAI-BLUP can be used as a preferred tool for mango selection.
