Dynamic mixtures reduce the severity of a number of diseases in rice and bean in low-input mountain farming systems of Nepal

This study was conducted to examine the disease severity of rice and bean dynamic mixtures in low-input mountain farming systems in Nepal. The dynamic mixtures of both crops were constructed by mixing improved varieties, breeding lines, and landraces collected from various locations in Nepal. The field experiments were carried out for three years in a randomized complete block design in two locations for rice and one location for beans. Natural selection was combined with one cycle of visual selection by farmers (both females and males), and technicians. Disease severity was scored by scientists at two developmental stages over three consecutive years for both crops. The most complex mixture, and the mixture derived from local landraces, exhibited a significantly lower disease severity. In rice, the mean disease scores in Jumla were 3.9, 4.05 and 4.3 for blast, bacterial leaf blight, and brown spot, respectively, while in Lamjung, they were 4.0, 4.1 and 4.2 for the same diseases. In beans, the mean disease scores were 4.4, 4.2 and 4.2 for anthracnose, rust, and powdery mildew, respectively. In some mixtures, there was evidence of a significant decrease in the disease severity over the years. For instance, the mixture formed from local landraces showed a decrease in bacterial leaf blight disease score from 2.50 in 2019 to 2.32 in 2020 and to 1.55 in 2021 in Jumla district. The findings of this study revealed that dynamic mixtures provide valuable varietal options for farmers in low-input mountain farming systems.
