Development of a near-isogenic line with a quantitative trait locus for the physical strength of the upper culm, BSUC11, and field evaluation of lodging resistance in rice

Lodging types like the bending-type are determined by the physical strength of upper culms in rice, but the upper culms have not yet been targeted in breeding for lodging resistance. It is unclear whether improving the physical strength of the upper culm would contribute to a high lodging resistance at the field level. This study developed an introgression line (IL) and a near-isogenic line (NIL) with BSUC11, which is the quantitative trait locus (QTL) for the physical strength of the upper culm, and evaluated lodging resistance and yield traits under field conditions to estimate the value as a breeding target. In narrowing the QTL region, BSUC11 contained several related genetic factors. Among them, BSUC11a, which showed a stable and strong effect, was determined to be the main effector region. From these results, this study selected IL with BSUC11 and NIL with BSUC11a. IL-BSUC11 showed higher holocellulose content of internode II after maturing, compared with “Koshihikari”, and had a greater plant angle and breaking strength of the upper culm. BSUC11a increased breaking strength and holocellulose content, mainly α-cellulose, of internode II after mid-maturing. NIL-BSUC11a showed improved plant angle and breaking strength of the upper culm, without reducing plant length and yield traits. These results indicate that BSUC11 or BSUC11a improves the resistance to bending-type lodging by strengthening the upper culm. The physical strength of the upper culm would be a new breeding target for lodging resistance in rice.
