Resilience of the hospital supply chain: a case study-based approach on safety stock

Bronchiolitis, a common respiratory condition in children, significantly burdens hospitals during seasonal surges. This study proposes a strategy to enhance hospital resilience by calculating safety stock levels to manage patient demand peaks. The study introduces the Unit of Care Product (UCP), a weighted aggregate of human and material resources, to determine safety stock levels. The UCP model was developed through interviews with healthcare providers to incorporate real-world resource needs during bronchiolitis outbreaks. The approach showed that personnel exhibited greater resilience with 50% flexibility to adapt to demand surges, while equipment and medications were less adaptable, highlighting areas for improvement in resource management. The UCP concept and safety stock calculation provide a framework for improving hospital preparedness and resilience, offering insights to optimize resource management during peak demand periods.
