<p>In recent years, growing exposure to climate extremes has increasingly threatened human survival and living, posing formidable challenges to high-quality development as well. Here we present prefecture-level evidence regarding extreme temperatures’ effects on high-quality economic development. We observe an obvious increase in high-temperature days and a typical “Center-Periphery” distribution of China’s high-quality development. We then reveal the significant adverse impacts of extreme high temperatures on high-quality economic development, with creative talent agglomeration and green technology investment mediating this relationship, verifying the “talent loss effect” and “resource crowding out effect”. Further analyses show that richer and colder cities are particularly sensitive to extreme temperatures, and future high temperature impacts vary dramatically across different warming scenarios. These findings elucidate a strong climate-development link on the urban scale, helping explain implications of mitigating climate change and facilitating China’s high-quality development.</p>
