The economic dimension of climate-smart agriculture: bibliometric review of trends, challenges, and opportunities from an economic perspective

Under intensifying climate change and persistent food insecurity, Climate-smart Agriculture (CSA) has emerged as a key strategy to enhance productivity, resilience, and mitigation. Existing studies on CSA often analyze its economic dimension in a fragmented manner, making it difficult to capture a comprehensive and integrated understanding. To bridge this gap, this review conducts a bibliometric analysis of 764 articles from the Web of Science (2013–2025). The analysis uses CiteSpace, Biblioshiny, and VOSviewer to examine publication trends, disciplinary and regional distributions, challenges and opportunities in keywords clusters, and research trends in temporal keywords burst. Results show that CSA economics research has accelerated since 2018, with agriculture, environmental science, and economics as leading fields. Keyword analysis identifies five dominant clusters including perceptions, smallholder farmers, greenhouse gas, Southern Africa, and crop yield. Across clusters, key challenges include institutional uncertainty, structural constraints, resource pressures, linear scaling models, and surface-level management, while opportunities emerge through perception-driven adoption, supportive policies and climate services, AI-enabled efficiency, partnerships and capacity-building, and soil-smart cropping. Temporal analysis highlights a trend from yield-focused assessments in the early phase to multi-criteria evaluations of sustainability, resource efficiency, and socio-economic inclusiveness in recent years. Overall, this study can enhance understanding CSA’s economic dimension, with broader implications for productivity, efficiency, inclusiveness, and long-term sustainability. Furthermore, this review contributes theoretical clarity and practical insights to future research and policy strategies for agricultural transformation under climate change.
