Can digital economy facilitate carbon reductions in China
摘要
The digital economy functions as a novel catalyst for robust economic expansion, furthermore, it constitutes a pivotal facilitator for attaining the “dual carbon” objectives. In order to examine the influence of the digital economy on carbon emissions, this paper employs panel data from 287 prefecture-level cities in China spanning the period from 2011 to 2020. Benchmark regression and spatial Durbin models are employed to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the impact and underlying mechanisms of the digital economy on carbon emissions. The findings reveal three key insights. First, the digital economy's impact on carbon emissions exhibits an inverted ‘N’ shape. Second, significant spatial heterogeneity exists in the impact. This is more pronounced in the central region compared to the western and eastern regions. Third, a substantial spatial spillover effect is evident. This means that local digital economy development significantly impacts the carbon emissions of adjacent regions.
