<p>The green transition of urban land use has emerged as a critical pathway to improving urban land use efficiency. Yet, its spatial impacts and spillover dynamics remain underexplored. This study investigates 107 prefecture-level cities in China’s Yangtze River Economic Belt from 2003–2022, analyzing the spatiotemporal evolution of green transition of urban land use and urban land use efficiency. A suite of spatial econometric models is employed to examine the direct and spillover effects of green transition of urban land use and to delineate its spillover boundaries. The results show that: (1) Both green transition of urban land use and urban land use efficiency have exhibited sustained growth over the study period, yet regional disparities have widened, revealing an increasingly unbalanced spatial pattern. (2) Green transition of urban land use suppresses urban land use efficiency locally but enhances it in adjacent regions, with spatial spillover effects outweighing direct impacts. In downstream cities of Yangtze River Economic Belt, green transition of urban land use promotes both local and neighboring urban land use efficiency, while in midstream and upstream areas, it hinders local urban land use efficiency but positively influences surrounding cities. (3) Among specific transition patterns — spatial transition of urban land use, functional transition of urban land use, and mode transition of urban land use — all exert positive spillover effects on urban land use efficiency, with functional transition of urban land use demonstrating the strongest impact. (4) The strength of these spillover effects diminishes with distance, and distinct spillover boundaries are identified for each transition type. These findings highlight the need for differentiated, region-specific land use transition strategies. Policymakers should aim to optimize spatial allocation, enhance functional integration, and extend the effective spillover reach of green transition of urban land use to support sustained improvements in urban land use efficiency.</p>
