Decomposition of eucalyptus litter as affected by the addition of two green manures

The use of green manure (GM) has great potential to improve nutrient cycling in eucalyptus plantations, where the high C: N ratio of litter limits decomposition and nutrient release. However, information about suitable GM species and application rates in these systems remains scarce. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of GM on the decomposition of eucalyptus leaf litter. Litterbags were used to monitor mass loss of eucalyptus leaves alone and mixed with jack bean (Canavalia ensiformes) or velvet bean (Mucuna aterrima) at two proportions (1:1 and 3:1) over one year. Cumulative reduction of more than 50% in mass was achieved between 150 and 210 days in the combinations with GM, while pure eucalyptus only achieved this reduction after 360 days. the half-life of eucalyptus litter decreased from 315 days without GM to 144 days with jack bean (1:1), representing a > 50% acceleration. The mixtures also exhibited higher nitrogen (N) contents and lower lignin: N and polyphenol: N ratios, which were strongly correlated with faster decomposition rates. Jack bean was more effective than velvet bean, showing similar performance in both proportions, while velvet bean was more responsive to the 1:1 mixture. These findings demonstrate that GM, especially jack bean, enhances eucalyptus litter decomposition and can be applied in relatively low proportions to improve nutrient cycling and sustainability in plantation systems.
