<p>The concept of New Quality Productive Forces (NPRO) garnered significant attention following its introduction in 2023. This modern production model substantially impacted the urban-rural income gap (Ineq). However, a notable gap existed in the empirical literature regarding the impact of NPRO on Ineq.&#xa0;The study examined how the development of NPRO in Chinese cities influenced Ineq, with a particular focus on heterogeneity across regions. Secondly, this paper investigates the impact of NPRO on Ineq, focusing on the spillover effects and mediating mechanisms underlying this impact. The findings indicated that (1) the NPRO index exhibited a fluctuating upward trend over time, while Ineq decreased annually, with both variables demonstrating an uneven spatial distribution. (2) The advancement of NPRO corresponded with a reduction in Ineq, an effect particularly pronounced in regions with relatively lower levels of income inequality. (3) A 1% increase in NPRO corresponded to a 0.015% decrease in local Ineq and a 0.022–0.026% decrease in Ineq in surrounding areas. (4) NPRO influenced Ineq through mediating pathways, including technological innovation, internet proliferation, and infrastructure development. The study proposes that differentiated governance strategies could optimize the role of NPRO in narrowing the urban-rural income gap.</p>
