A study on the mechanism and spatial effect of rural digital economy on agricultural carbon emissions - evidence from China’s provinces

In the context of the commitment to carbon neutrality worldwide, agriculture is one of the crucial sectors to achieve the "carbon neutrality" goal. In this modern era of technology, while improving the efficiency of agricultural production, the digital economy provides the possibilities for the low-carbon transformation of agriculture. Based on the theory of coordinated development and economic endogenic growth, this study analyses the spatiotemporal evolution of the level of rural digital economy development and agricultural carbon emissions in 30 provinces in China. and uses panel data from 2013–2021 to analyze the level of rural digital economic development affects agricultural carbon emissions with the help of panel regression and the mediation effect models, and the spatial spillover effect model has been analyzed to explore the spatial effect of digital economic development. The research shows that from 2013 to 2021, China's carbon emissions in many provinces have a significant downward trend. The development level of the rural digital economy is in a state of continuous growth, but there are significant regional differences. The rural digital economy has significantly reduced agricultural carbon emissions. In addition, the effect of reducing agricultural carbon emissions can be improved through two mechanisms: technological innovation effect and planting structure improvement. From the perspective of heterogeneity, the impact of the rural digital economy on agricultural carbon reduction in the central and eastern regions is significant. However, the impact on the western region is not significant. Due to the strong spatial spillover effect of the digital economy, the development of a rural digital economy can reduce agricultural carbon emissions in the province and neighboring provinces. These findings emphasize the importance of adopting digital technology as early as possible in rural areas to fully use the "carbon emission reduction" and "technology spillover" effects of the rural digital economy.
