Dynamic coupling and interaction mechanisms between digital infrastructure and urban sustainable renewal: a case study of Jiangsu Province

This study explores the coupling response between Digital Infrastructure (DI) and Urban Sustainable Renewal (USR) in Jiangsu Province, China, from 2014 to 2023, employing a multi-dimensional indicator system and advanced analytical methods such as coupling coordination analysis and impulse response analysis. The results reveal significant upward trends in DI and USR development, with regional disparities favoring southern and eastern cities due to economic, technological, and policy advantages. The coupling coordination degree between DI and USR demonstrates a synergistic relationship, notably stronger in economically advanced cities like Nanjing, Suzhou, and Wuxi. Key drivers influencing the coupling coordination include ecological conditions, urban spatial structure, and technological innovation, with their interactions significantly enhancing urban renewal efficiency and sustainability. Impulse response analysis uncovers a complex bidirectional relationship: DI initially boosts USR through technological spillover and investment effects but shows diminishing marginal returns over time. Conversely, USR enhances DI by optimizing urban functionality but stabilizes in the long term due to emerging environmental and social challenges. These findings highlight the necessity for balanced resource allocation and adaptive policies to sustain DI and USR integration.
