Coupling coordination of the digital economy, tourism development and low-carbon economy efficiency: the case of China

Coupling coordination of the digital economy, tourism development, and low-carbon economic efficiency (CCDTL) constitutes a vital pathway for achieving sustainable development; however, related research remains insufficient. This study constructs an analytical framework for CCDTL using panel data from 30 Chinese provinces between 2000 and 2021. First, the CCDTL levels are measured using a coupling coordination model, followed by an examination of their spatiotemporal characteristics through kernel density estimation and spatial Markov chain analysis. Furthermore, the study integrates the “Technology-Organization-Environment” theoretical framework and innovatively combines traditional regression models with random forest regression to identify key drivers of CCDTL. The results reveal the following. (1) CCDTL has improved significantly, exhibiting strong coordination, with a spatial distribution pattern of “eastern > central > western” regions. Eastern and western regions display a unimodal dynamic distribution, indicating pronounced polarization, whereas central regions exhibit a bimodal distribution with weaker polarization. (2) CCDTL demonstrates notable path dependence and transition inertia, yet spatial spillover effects are evident. When being adjacent to high- (low-) CCDTL provinces, a province’s likelihood of improving (declining) in its CCDTL increases substantially. (3) Technological, organizational, and environmental factors all significantly increase CCDTL, with their impacts exhibiting dynamic nonlinear characteristics. Moreover, the contribution of green innovation surpasses that of other factors. This study provides theoretical and policy insights for policymakers seeking to enhance CCDTL based on its spatiotemporal evolution patterns and key drivers in the context of digital-real economy integration, ultimately advancing sustainable development.
