<p>The Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics exemplify how mega-events can accelerate sustainable transitions through green technology innovation. Despite their focus on carbon neutrality, evidence of their catalytic impacts on innovation remains Limited. This study addresses this gap by quantifying the causal effects of the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics on regional green innovation, examines host, co-host, and neighboring city heterogeneity, and identifies driving mechanisms. Using the synthetic control method (SCM), we construct counterfactuals trajectories for Beijing and Zhangjiakou to isolate bid-induced innovation changes. This research conclude that mega-events can accelerate green innovation when regional capacities align with policy interventions. Mechanism analysis identifies investments in science education and the restructuring of employment in the tertiary sector were critical pathways. Policy implications support embedding green R&amp;D mandates into event bidding criteria and designing phased fiscal incentives to transform event-driven technologies into scalable urban solutions. Regional innovation clusters should prioritize industrial complementarity to prevent resource siphoning.</p>
