<p>This paper centers on the evaluation of groundwater quality in the commercial and industrialized city of Onitsha. This is necessary as waste management systems are poor in the area. Twenty-four(24) samples (groundwater) were collected and analysed for major hydrochemical constituents using spectrophotometric methods. Domestic and industrial indices like corrosivity index, Collin’s ratio, Water Quality Index and Domestic useability were applied, while all irrigation indices were used to evaluate the suitability for irrigation. Result indicates that pH ranges from 3.25 to 7.48 with an average value of 5.14. Computed water quality index (WQI) classified the water samples as excellent water type for drinking purposes. Irrigation parameters showed that potential salinity (PS) ranged from 0.110 to 4.000 with an average value of 1.243, Kelly’s ratio (KR) varied from 0.064 to 1.863 with an average value of 0.611, sodium percentage (Na %) ranged from 6.35to 186.23 with an average value of 62.26, sodium absorption ratio (SAR) ranged from 0.104 to 0.796 with an average value of 0.398, soluble sodium percentage (SSP) ranged from 4.822 to 128.175 with an average value of 42.126, magnesium absorption ratio (MAR) ranged from 0.35 to 98.16 with an average value of 60.86, total hardness (TH) ranged from 6.40 to 199.50 meq/L with an average value of 62.03 meq/L and residual sodium carbonate (RSC) ranged from − 0.432 to 16.367 with an average value of 2.603. Groundwater in the area is good for domestic uses and fairly suitable for irrigation purposes. Improved waste management is recommended in the area.</p>
