Performance outcomes of sustainability-driven flexibility in supply chains: how do AI-based and circular economy practices really contribute?

AI-driven circular economy initiatives using AI-enabled energy planning tools can help to conserve biodiversity, and transforming waste into a regenerative resource flow, thus helping to safeguard the planet's natural systems—which all countries should be seeking to achieve . This study examines the impact of supply chain sustainability (SCS) on supply chain flexibility (SCF) and performance (SCP), with a specific focus on the mediating roles of circular economy practices (CEPs) and AI-based practices (AIPs) . Structural equation modelling (SEM) was used to assess 450 survey responses from employees in multiple industries in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) . Using SmartPLS version 4, the proposed model was evaluated using SmartPLS version 4; path coefficients were calculated to determine the relationships between constructs, and R² values were used to measure the impact of each predictor. The postulated hypotheses on the relationships between SCS, SCF, SCP, CEPs and AIPs were tested using path analysis with a bootstrapping procedure. Mediation analysis using bootstrapped confidence intervals was conducted to evaluate the indirect effects of circular economy practices and AI-based practices . Supply chain sustainability had a significant positive effect on supply chain flexibility, which in turn substantially improved SCP . CEPs and AIPs had significant positive mediating effects on the relationship between supply chain sustainability and performance, with the effect of CEPs being stronger. In other words, employees working for companies with greater AI integration gained greater flexibility benefits from their sustainability initiatives. Similarly, CEP implementation moderated the relationship between SCF and SCP, with companies with more advanced CEPs enjoying a greater positive effect of flexibility on performance. Prioritising supply chain sustainability promotes flexibility and resilience, and firms that implement sustainability practices may be better able to adapt to market fluctuations, regulatory changes, and supply chain disruptions . Given the ecological regulations, competitive pressure, and supply chain complexity in the UAE, sustainability practices may improve flexibility , and the circular economy.
