<p>The transformation of the green economy and clean energy has been aided by digitization. Most of the existing research has focused on the impact of the digital economy (DE) on carbon emissions. However, while considering the crucial role of renewable energy (RENE) in achieving carbon neutrality, there remains a lack of analysis of the relationship between DE and RENE. Using a sample of Chinese provincial data from 2011 to 2022, we found that the development of RENE was significantly accelerated by DE, and this influence was stronger in areas with higher industrial-added value and per capita income. DE fosters the accelerated growth of RENE by raising public concern for the environment and bolstering the research and development capabilities of the high-tech industry. The chain mediating effect model substantiates the existence of a functional channel that includes DE growth, increased public concern, accelerated technological advancement, and promotion of the overall development of RENE. This study proposes practical implications for better utilization of DE to support the transformation of the RENE system and achieve carbon neutrality.</p>

Accelerating the clean energy transition: Nexus between the digital economy, public concern, and renewable energy in China
