Assessing the sustainability of water resources and analyzing influencing factors based on an improved ecological footprint model: a case study of Guangdong Province

Assessing water resource sustainability and studying its key drivers is essential for ensuring their ongoing utilization. The traditional WEF has been supplemented with water pollution and freshwater products, while the WEC has incorporated sewage treatment volume and seawater desalination volume, with path analysis used to examine the influencing factors. This research assesses water resource utilization in Guangdong Province between 2013 and 2022. It was found that the WEC in Guangdong Province exhibited fluctuations with a slight upward trend. WEF decreased by approximately 53%. WRED decreased by 97.81%. WEPI fluctuated and declined by 52%. WGDP saw a decline of over 77%. WECI over the years was 1.373, indicating a state of sustainable development of water resources. However, dependence on atmospheric precipitation, water pollution, and land development and utilization constrain its sustainable development. Future policy implications include optimizing the usage rate of water resources, establishing a collaborative protection mechanism, and promoting ecological restoration to ensure long-term water resource sustainability.
