<p>Scholars and decision-makers have acknowledged the digital economy’s potential to advance environmentally friendly growth and enhance the environment. However, the role of the digital economy in narrowing the gap in environmental development between the East and the West of China still needs further research. This article examines the effects of the expansion of the digital economy on the ecological divide between the East and the West using data from 282 Chinese prefecture-level cities between 2007 and 2021. It does this by utilizing the DID and DML models. The study’s findings demonstrate how the digital economy has dramatically reduced the environmental development gap between the East and the West by encouraging green innovation, maximizing resource use, and enhancing energy efficiency. Furthermore, it was discovered that the growth of the digital economy has significant geographical spillover effects using the SAR-DID model. This discovery gives policymakers a new perspective, emphasizing the importance of promoting digital economy development in achieving regional environmental balance.</p>
