Identifying the barriers in implementing circular strategies in casting industries for achieving sustainable development goals

This study investigates the extent to which circular economy (CE) strategies can be used to implement Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the casting industries. The casting industry, which has been widely chastised for its environmental impact and depletion of valuable resources, has demonstrated significant potential for applying CE practices. Hence it is crucial to identify the critical barriers to implementing CE principles in casting industries and the correlation between the associated barriers in implementing CE principles and the shift towards achieving SDGs. Decision Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory (DEMATEL) is deliberated here as an efficient way to determine the cause-effect chain elements of an intricate system. A total of nine experts were contacted for the expert values for the calculation. After the calculation, the interrelation between the barriers was found. The barrier which influences many other barriers is found to be the predominant one. The calculation is carried out for the sub barriers and results are formulated based on an extensive study. Cause and effect diagrams illustrated the diagrammatic representation of the influence of one barrier on another. The findings reveal the dominant barriers that influence others, highlighting key areas for intervention. This is particularly relevant for small and medium-sized enterprises, where challenges in adopting circular economy practices are intensified by ongoing constraints in financing, workforce, and infrastructure.
