<p>With the acceleration of urbanization, human residence and production activities in cities have become the main source of industrial pollution and climate change. While existing studies often neglect the environmental impacts of the asynchronous evolution of physical and social space, and there is an urgent need for a multidimensional analytical framework. Taking 53 cities in the Yellow River Basin as research samples, this study comprehensively applies the grey spatiotemporal correlation model, the asynchronous growth model and spatial econometrics methods to reveal the environmental effects of asynchronous interaction between physical space and social space (AIPS) and its spatiotemporal divergence characteristics. The results show that: (1) AIPS exerts an inverted U-shape effect on pollution emission, and its effect is more significant in the cities flowing through the Yellow River. (2) The mechanism is regulated by lowering the environmental aversion of residents and by the tendency of governmental expenditures. (3) A single administrative jurisdiction strengthens the environmental effect of AIPS. The study suggests that urban agglomerations in the river basin need to coordinate spatial planning and balance the conflicts between development and environment through policy interventions, so as to give scientific references for the sustainable development of the word similar regions.</p>
